Talking a client through a design concept can be a tough task. Jeremy shares some tips and examples on how to present effectively and get the feedback you need.
A common challenge for even the best of web designers is crafting the right words to describe and explain a design concept. So when it comes time to present that concept to a client or internal critique, many designers find it difficult to justify and explain the visual decisions that were made. This is because the act of designing has a lot to do with emotion and feelings. “It just feels right.” This intuition often helps to get into the right ballpark from an aesthetic point of view, but this explanation often doesn’t fly with a client, especially if the design concept looks drastically different from their expectations. There’s no question it’s a challenge to put words to a design concept, but if we really believe our concept is right, and we want our clients to come along with us, we must be better at verbally communicating the visual choices we make.
Using Goals
One of the most effective ways to explain a design concept is to relate it directly to the goals. Creating engagement goals with your client is a very valuable exercise for many reasons. First, it gets everyone on the same page. Second, it gives everyone a filter to evaluate the various parts of the engagement, whether it’s content, UX, UI, etc. Establishing goals can take time depending on the number of stakeholders, and it’s best done at an in-person meeting, such as a kickoff .
Discussing and voting on engagement goals in a kickoff meeting gets everyone on the same page from the start, and serves as a guide towards making decisions throughout the engagement.
Taking it a step further, determining Objectives and Key Results ( OKRs ), as Dan Mall shares in this 99U article , is a great way to specify goals as well as to measure if those goals are being met. These should be documented and accessible to all team members throughout the engagement. Having the goals in hand when creating the design aids in making visual decisions and helps to start attaching tangible language and reasoning into a concept as it’s being designed.
So when presenting a design concept, if we talk about how the visual choices we’ve made help us accomplish the goals we’ve previously established and framed the conversation around that, along with our reasoning behind the color, typography, and layout choices, the discussion will be way more productive. It’s hard to argue with sound reasoning.
In Practice
Here’s an example. A utility client of ours, Dayton Power & Light came to us and wanted to create a site that promoted industrial real estate in West Central Ohio available for development ( read the entire case study here ). One of the main goals of the site was to create something memorable and unique. So in our initial design meeting, we presented a design concept that would be built in React and make use of interesting page transitions and an always-present map on the left half with scrolling info on the right on larger screens. We used Mapbox to plot points of interest with custom iconography. We presented several examples of sites that used similar transitions and animations. During and after presenting, we made sure to verbalize the goals—specifically the desire for the site to be unique and memorable and how we’re achieving that through this concept. Because of this, the client was on board with our approach.
Framing the Conversation
It’s not enough to pull up a jpeg or prototype of a website and say, “What do you think?” to a client. Especially if we’re presenting to a large group of stakeholders, this opens up the conversation to go many disparate directions. Instead, let’s have a plan going in. Attack the explanation up front, and frame the conversation around the reasoning behind the visual concept.
Establishing a visual vocabulary around a design concept is another great way to attach words to visuals. These can be words that are collected from previous conversations and generated throughout the design process. In the case of Ohio Certified Sites, the client had said they wanted the site to be “memorable” and “unique.” So we repeated those and other familiar, descriptive words when presenting visuals.
Using an example from the earlier-mentioned engagement, we had made some unexpected design choices that needed to be explained in the initial design concept meeting. Instead of just getting initial feedback, we wanted to explain our reasoning behind the decisions up front. One of these decisions was the color palette, specifically the yellow color. The site isn’t directly connected to the DP&L brand, but there was an expectation from the stakeholders that it would carry some of the same brand feel—colors, typography, etc. The main brand color is blue. Because of the fact that the audience for this site could essentially be located anywhere in the world and not have previous brand knowledge of DP&L, we strayed from the corporate color palette and used a bright yellow. We explained we chose the yellow because it demanded attention to the “content” side of the page, had the right amount of contrast with the content, and also referenced common coloring of construction equipment (think bulldozers, frontloaders, etc.). We also pointed out that yellow has been shown to improve memory (think post-it notes and highlighters) and related that back to our goal of making a unique and memorable site. Initially, the business team had doubts about getting buy-in on the new color palette from their leaders, but we made the design case and were able to get approval.
Going in with a plan and reasoning behind your design is important. You’re answering your client’s questions before they ask and possibly answering questions they didn’t know how to ask. Presenting this way may not mean every concept sails through with no changes, but your client will understand it better and be able to better make logical business decisions.
A Few Other Tips:
Be confident when presenting design. If you’re not confident when presenting a design concept, it’s hard to get people on board. There’s some salesmanship that has to happen here without being “salesy.” You have to believe that the concept you’re presenting is the right one for the job. Many designers often don’t feel comfortable communicating verbally (myself included). After all, our expertise is in visual communication, right? But it’s worth spending time crafting words to go along with a design concept. That, along with helpful internal critique and discussion, will help you feel more confident going into a design presentation.
Ask Specific Questions
One way to get helpful feedback is to ask focused questions. This is helpful to steer the conversation in an area where you’d really like feedback. Design presentations can often turn solely into discussions on content, which can get things off track. Certainly, some content discussion is expected, but hopefully, much of that has already been talked about. Asking questions also includes the client’s participation in the details of design, making them feel part of the process. So instead of asking vague questions like, “What do you think?” ask something more along the lines of, “How do you think this concept supports the goal of _______?” or “In what ways does it fail?” Again, referring back to the goals helps to keep everyone on the same page and on the same team.
Cheat Sheet
Often times, when we present a design concept, we use my laptop to connect to the projector or display. I’ve found it helpful to create a document beforehand that contains notes and attaches words to visuals in the concept. I print this out and take it to the meeting as a backup to ensure I hit all the points I want to or help me out if I forget.

Talking about design when presenting to a client can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. She does a great job of referencing the client’s wants/needs (goals) and really selling the design with confidence.

There’s more to designing than designing alone. How you deliver your design work to a client can change the way your designs are received and perceived.
Wondering how to present design to clients? You have two options:
- Send a batch of finished files for them to view in their own time
- Deliver a design presentation that’s professional and interactive
We prefer the latter. Why?
The journey to the end product may seem obvious to you, but most of the time, your clients are not designers (that’s why they hired you).
Presenting design concepts to clients immerses them into the strategy of your process, making them more likely to believe in the final design.
In this article, we’ll explain how delivering a design presentation to clients will:
- Position you as a professional
- Prove your confidence and skill as a designer to deliver a brief
- Show your client you are fully invested in them and their business
- Create a memorable experience between you and your client
- Reduce the number of revisions needed
Step 1: Use a strong presentation design
Presentations don’t have to be complicated. They act as a platform in which you share your work, the process, and the outcome digitally – whether you’re working remotely or presenting in person.
A well-designed presentation template will save you time and exhibit your professionalism.
Drop in your work (and the details we’ll go into), personalize it with the client’s brand colors and logo, and make sure to have your own logo and contact information visible on each slide.
Keep it simple, but it’s the attention to detail that will show your client that you mean business (and are worth a premium price tag).

Step 2: Revisit the brief
At the start of your design presentation to a client, bring them right back to the initial brief.
This will show you’ve understood the assignment and delivered accordingly, guiding them to align with your creative direction.
Clients are busy, so your focus should be to present your work in the context of solving their problems .
You could include:
- The client’s goal – e.g. increase brand awareness, engagement, conversions
- The objective and use for the design – e.g. packaging for a new product launch
- The deliverables required – e.g. a set of shareable social media graphics
Step 3: Explain the research
When you tackle a new design project, you’ll undergo research before you begin.
This information informs your choices, so share these insights with your client to help them see the benefits for them, and that you’ve considered the end user.
Use simple data visualization to explain:
- The customer demographic
- Any S.W.O.T analysis of competitors
- A mood board
Keep it brief, 1-2 slides will do here. Build excitement, remove any fluff.
Step 4: Document the process
Experienced, high-level designers know that the decisions leading to the final design are just as important as the final design itself.
Each creative decision you make will have a reason behind it, and this is your chance to show that reasoning to the client.
In this section, showcase the color palette, font choices, shapes or graphics that you developed throughout the project, based on the research.
What led you to make these choices?
The goal is to address and answer any queries your client may have about the designs before they need to ask them.
You don’t need to share initial sketches, but it’s good practice to illustrate how the elements of your design link back to the initial brief.
This will help the client understand the logic and strategy behind your work, in the context of their wanted outcome.
Step 5: Showcase the final options
As a creative, you’ll likely end up with multiple iterations of any one design brief. But your client doesn’t need to see an overwhelming amount of choice.
If you have more than one design, reduce it to no more than 3 options.
Remember: you’re guiding the client from brief, to idea, to outcome. The final choices should flow from the previous slides to show continuity and expert creative direction.
Step 6: Bring your designs to life
Sharing your designs in real life scenarios is a highly effective way to let your client visualize the end product in action.
Use mockups to demonstrate how your design will fit into the lifestyle of the end user.
Social media graphics : a mockup to show social posts on a phone.
Packaging design : let it jump off the page by placing it directly onto a 3D product.
It’s all about creating a memorable experience.
Once a client sees the design work in the situation it’s intended for, they will have a better understanding of whether the design is right for them and their end goal.
Step 7: Listen to feedback
Design work is a two-way street. As you go through your presentation, invite feedback and be open to suggestions that your client may have.
Be confident in your decisions, but accept that the client may have additional ideas for improvement. Being open to feedback and reacting efficiently and professionally will show that you respect your client’s business, so listen to pain points they may have and share how your designs address them.

Transcript: Concept Design Presentation Unit 10 - Engaging An Audience Concept Overview Brief Concept Overview my concept for this unit is to create social media adverts for Neal's Yard in order to gain attention from younger people. social media is some of the most effective ways to advertise products to potential customers and to gain attention from different audiences. i want to create an advert that catches a persons attention and therefore makes them want to look more into Neal's Yard as a company and even think about and then purchase a product. i am also creating an advert that fits their current advertising style as to keep within what they're already doing. their adverts are simple, natural and beautiful to look at. Types of advertising Adverts I've been thinking about several different advertising options and the best platforms to create adverts for. My preferred options are Instagram stories and Twitter as i use those most often and that's also the places where i get most exposure to different types of adverts. One of the things i'm going to have to work around is coming up with the advertising ideas by myself as Neals Yard currently doesn't have have any social media adverts. I will be looking at their other current adverts to get inspiration. Targeting an audience One of the things I've learnt from my research but also from myself being a consumer is that what works and attracts one age group definitely doesn't work from another. That's one of the reasons I've chosen to do a social media advert, it will attract and target a younger demographic. Targeting An Audience I need to create an advert that is going to capture the persons attention long enough to stop them from continuing to scroll. By doing research i can look at the best adverts that seem to engage younger demographics then incorporate as much as i can then into mine. When thinking about this project i wanted to make sure i was doing something i could be inspired doing and something that had an amazing message or ethos behind. Ethos Company ethos As customers you can expect to see: - fair pricing - efficient and knowledgeable service - straightforward descriptions of products and services - freely available information about products and suppliers this means that from the products you are buying you can expect good quality products that have been made with both the enviroment and the staff behind them in mind. 5 Rules for Concept Presentation

Poor presentation can kill promising ideas too quickly.
We can all agree on this – the hardest part of design is presenting our work. For many designers, the fear of presenting to a client is the thought that your presentation can either make or break the deal . The way an idea is presented plays a huge difference in helping clients see from our point of view, to better describe our design solution.
At JIN Design, we follow a 5-rules guide when doing concept presentation. For aspiring designers out there, pen down a tip or two! ? Our rules might just come in handy for you one day.
1. Present in context
The biggest mistake to make in concept presentation is to describe all the visual features of the interface design. Yes, client does want to see how beautiful the website or app interfaces is , but they care more about whether your proposed design can solve their problem and meet their business goal.
The first step of presentation is to show the client that you understand the problem that your design is intended to solve. Focus on the meaning behind the design instead of talking about the aesthetic.
At the start of every concept presentation, we will always show the project scope and the list of problems we will be solving (which shall be established at the start of the project) , to align with the client’s thinking and set their expectation. Personally, I like to name my concept – this sets the context of my idea and provide a clear line of my design strategy.
“Aesthetic presentation should only focus on the the key elements that support the success criteria of your design.”
2. Always present in person
One time, due to the client’s busy schedule, we were only able to send our design prototype through email and the feedback received were less than desirable. There were so many questions that we could have answered directly, if a formal presentation was set.
From there, we learned our lesson and told ourselves that we must not allow such situation to happen again!
It’s a presentation. We need to be present – in person – to provide clarity and convey our concept clearly. Sending out the prototype or presentation changes the way we want our work to be presented as we have no control over how the client look at our design.
Furthermore, in a physical presentation, you will be able to guide your client to give you the relevant feedback and meet your goal of the meeting to confirm a certain subject matter, instead of just getting feedback on colors, typefaces and all the other stuff you may not want.
3. Be prepared
Being able to present your idea clearly and achieve your goals require a lot of planning and rehearsing.
Prepare a well-designed & nicely branded presentation template with a clear agenda and content structure to bring your client through your thought process. Don’t just throw in your wireframes or mock-up screens and assume your client know what that is. To avoid confusion, include some short notes in your slide, and explain to them in detail during your presentation.
4. Keep the bigger picture in mind
When gathering feedback after presentation, don’t get drowned in the sea of details like corner rounding, colours they dislike or other wild ideas they want try out.
Even with a strong opinion that their feedback and suggestions will not work, explain clearly your thought process instead of rejecting their opinions upfront. Try to explain to them on what might happen and the potential risk, if their suggestion is implemented, before offering them another solution. Put your design in context of the bigger picture and address how your design serve the business goals/meet the user requirements effectively.
5. There’s no need to present multiple design concepts
Unlike other design agencies, we are not in the favour of presenting multiple designs. We believe that the reason a client hire us is because we are the expert in designing a solution for their problem. Educate and advise your client on why your approach is the best in meeting their business goals/the user requirements.
Presenting multiple options may work against you and serve as a disservice to your client – it is as if leaving it up to the client to make the decision, rather than saying “we are the experts, we know best”.

3 Steps for a Powerful Design Concept Presentation
After the client signs the paperwork you transition out of the sales and into design implementation mode. Here’s where your design methodology begins.
The kick-off meeting should provide you with a deep understanding of your client. The goal here is two-fold. You really want to get to know who they are and collect the specifics so you begin your creative. This conversation is where intimates of how the design transformation will impact their lifestyle should surface. It’s not about 2 hours to measure everything, but rather spearheading a dialogue exploring details about who they are, the possibilities and what they value.
Fast forward four to six weeks and it’s time to present your ideas.
Your design concept presentation is when you need to bring your absolute A-Game. For your clients, it should feel like their birthday with butterflies in their stomach as they anticipate a gift. Here’s where you show clients that you’ve understood exactly who they are and your reveal of the absolute best possibilities for their space. It’s not enough to deliver an adequate, predictable or mediocre design and it’s not enough to half – fast your delivery of their future space.
The presentation should remove any doubts and provide an emotional yes. With luck, they’ll be so excited that they’ll happily push go and hand over the cheque. ( Who are we kidding? They wire money these days. )
To ace your design concept presentations, you need to do several things: Give yourself plenty of time, take advantage of the best tools available to present your ideas, and get all the details in perfect working order.
Step 1: Don’t Rush
One of the most common mistakes designers make when it comes to the design presentation has nothing to do with the design itself.
It’s failing to leave themselves enough time to do their best work.
Any artist knows the power of looking at their work with fresh eyes. And you can’t get that fresh-eyed perspective without rest periods built into your creative process.
You may know how long it will take to get an initial concept completed; however, if you haven’t scheduled time for rest periods and for the subsequent reworks, there’s no chance that you’ll be showing your client the best version of what you can offer.

Respecting this rest time is so important. Rest periods bring a stronger design perceptive — a real “wow” factor. They allow time for designers to be intentional with their designs for that particular client.
Mediocrity should not be an option. Delivering unique, outstanding work is particularly important for interior designers who want to cement their brand and carve out their place in the market. (For more, read my post on How to Start Standing Boldly in Your Designs Today .)
The excitement about the project and perhaps the accompanying cash inflow can cloud designers’ judgment as they’re establishing deadlines. Designers may also be concerned with making a good impression on the client and think that a quick turnaround is a good way to do that. It’s easy to be overly optimistic about what any of us will be able to accomplish in any given time period.
Perhaps you’ve heard of this note, underpromise and overdeliver. You’ll almost never regret giving yourself some extra time to make your design presentation even better.
Note: Building extra time into your creative process doesn’t mean that you can stop paying attention to the overall time against the project. Build flexibility into your fee but always be mindful. Step 2: Choose Tools Carefully
Some designers start out by presenting storyboards that showcase their inspiration for the project. That inspiration really helps set the tone of what’s to come. As you make your way through inspiration, floor plans, drawings, furniture, fabric, wallpaper, paint suggestions and more – what’s important is that you’ve rehearsed your delivery.
Regardless of how you choose to organize and structure your presentations, you’ll want to use some combination of both physical and digital presentation tools. Which ones you choose will depend on the project itself and on the context of your meeting.
Physical Storyboards and Samples
Physical storyboards are old school. Today we replace your arts & craft project to PowerPoint for PC or Keynote for MAC.
Having samples on hand for things like fabrics, flooring, wallpaper, upholstery and more go a long way toward helping the client understand how the space is meant to look and feel. The ability for your clients to physically touch and move around the various design elements turns this presentation into a memorable WOW factor for them.

Step 3: Nail Down the Business Details
The designs themselves may be the most important part of your presentation, but they’re not the only thing you need to get in order to make the best impression possible. Presenting your interior design business professionally will also require getting the rest of your paperwork to be lined up. That means the decorating budget report and the project timeline.
Presentation documents should also include a
- Budget – This report should represent an overview of the sum of the items you’ve presented in the design concept presentation.
- Timeline – Here’s where we can forecast the project timelines; identifying resources and any potential hiccups.
All of this paperwork should be pleasing to the eye and branded with your logo and personal style. It’s important to have professionally printed copies available. I suggest holding it until the end of the presentation otherwise, you’ll notice the client fast forwarding through the pages and it’s a distraction.
Getting the all the details right reaffirms your client decision in selecting you. It shows them that you are the perfect interior design firm for them.

Using an example from the earlier-mentioned engagement, we had made some unexpected design choices that needed to be explained in the initial design concept meeting. Instead of just getting initial feedback, we wanted to explain our reasoning behind the decisions up front. One of these decisions was the color palette, specifically the yellow color.
Step 1: Use a strong presentation design. Presentations don't have to be complicated. They act as a platform in which you share your work, the process, and the outcome digitally - whether you're working remotely or presenting in person.
