A Systematic Literature Review of Digital Platform Business Models
2021, Springer eBooks
Platforms and business models have been a subject of academic analysis and practical application for years. As digital platforms are significantly different due to an intervened and complex nature, typologies, fundamental concepts, and business models have been studied from separated perspectives. This paper reviews the platform and business model literature using a systematic literature review that identifies concepts underlying digital platforms. Henceforward, this research develops a working definition and links 109 business model components to 24 digital platform concepts to figure out what components constitute digital platforms' business models. Furthermore, the analysis shows that several digital platform concepts were deficient or not represented by business model components indicating the need for future research. The study concludes and discusses theoretical and practical implications, suggests future research areas, and marks its limitations.

Digital revolution, as a result of the fourth industrial revolution is changing the way people live and conduct their business. Its promise of sustainability is building optimism amongst users. However, there is a lack of research in understanding how digital platform business models can be tailored for use in existing businesses and how this technology can be used to revolutionize new businesses. This study conducted a systematic literature review to create a deeper understanding of the technology of digital platform business models and their characteristics and application. The results of this study are used to develop a hybrid structure of the digital platform business models and their components. Also, this study identified the critical elements of the cyber-physical system. Herein, the core, trendy, intermittent, and emergent keywords relating to digital platform business models are placed and analyzed. This study contributed to the body of knowledge by an in-depth understandin...
Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2021
Digital platforms (DPs)-technical core artifacts augmented by peripheral third-party complementary resources-facilitate the interaction and collaboration of different actors through highlyefficient resource matching. As DPs differ significantly in their configurations and applications, it is important from both a descriptive and a design perspective to define classes of DPs. As an intentionally designed artifact, every classification pursues a certain purpose. In this research, the purpose is to classify DPs from a business model perspective, i.e. to identify DP clusters that each share a similar business model type. We follow Nickerson et al.'s (2013) method for taxonomy development. By validating the conceptually derived design dimensions with ten DP cases, we identify platform structure and platform participants as the major clustering constituent characteristics. Building on the proposed taxonomy, we derive four DP archetypes that follow distinct design configurations, namely business innovation platforms, consumer innovation platforms, business exchange platforms and consumer exchange platforms.

Review of Network Economics, 2000
The paper proposes an analytical framework for comparing different business models for producing information goods and digital services. It is based on three dimensions that also refer to contrasted literature: the economics of matching, the economics of assembling and the economics of knowledge management. Our framework attempts to identify the principal trade-offs at the core of choices among alternative digital business models, and to compare them in terms of competitiveness and efficiency. It also highlights the role played by users in the production of information goods and competition with pure suppliers.

Purpose This study aims to increase the understanding of digital platform businesses and business model innovation in two-sided markets. Design/methodology/approach A new business model canvas tool was created through abductive reasoning and a real-life case study. The case was a unique driving school digital platform that belongs to employee and professional service platforms. Findings The proposed business model canvas is based on Scholten's canvas (2016) for platform businesses and complements it by acknowledging changes in people's values and macro-environmental factors as new elements. Research limitations/implications (if applicable) The study is limited to an exemplary case of a driving school digital platform. However, the results and the novel canvas tool can be applied to innovating business models for digital service platforms in many industries. Originality/value The novelty of the study is derived from the insights created by the case study and the new tool that...
Management & Marketing
Digital platforms have the ability to connect people, organizations and resources with the aim of facilitating the core interactions between businesses and consumers as well as assuring a greater efficiency for the business management. New business concepts, such as innovative start-ups, are therefore created based on innovation, scalability and the relationships within the community around them. The purpose of this work is to deeply understand the evolution of business models brought by innovative and dynamic companies operating through online platforms. In order to achieve the objectives set, an exploratory multiple-case study was designed based on in-depth structured interviews. The aim was to conduct a mixed analysis, in order to rely both on qualitative and quantitative data. The structured interview protocol was therefore designed to collect and then analyse data concerning the company profile and managers’ perspectives on the phenomenon of interest. The interview protocol was...

In recent decades, multi-sided platform business models have become an important avenue for value creation and capture, but the phenomenon itself remains under-theorized. We address this gap and present new, empirically-driven insights into how platform business models evolve in a context of fierce competition. Through a longitudinal, qualitative study of twelve multi-sided platforms that operate under challenging industry conditions, we discover that success in platform battles can plausibly be explained by a combination of complexity in the business model design, and the simultaneous use of innovation and imitation to create highly intricate systems of activities. We further discuss how our findings open several new avenues for future platform research.

Purpose This research introduces a new business model logic, highlighting value processes in and properties of platform business models to inform business model thinking from a systemic and dynamic perspective. It challenges the idea of firms managing, influencing and controlling entire activity systems. Design/methodology/approach The study traces the evolution of different approaches to business models and assesses theories that explain value cocreation and systemic value capture to develop a new business model logic. Findings Business model thinking has evolved away from Porter`s value chain to a new logic based on open networks and platforms. This study develops a framework for understanding platform business models from a systemic perspective. Derived from S-D logic, this new business model logic responds to phenomena in contemporary business environments characterized by increasing connectivity and sociality among actors. Research limitations The framework, developed from an extensive body of business model literature, has yet to be subjected to empirical investigation. Future research may involve the exploration of business model design processes and business model innovation from a systemic perspective. Practical implications Managers who aim to design their business models based on the logic of platform businesses require an understanding of their organisation's collaboration potential, technological interfaces, and potential to leverage network relationships. This research guides start-ups and incumbents to evaluate their platform potential. Originality This study systematically emancipates the business model logic from a firm-centered, inside-out perspective; focuses on network relationships beyond the customer-firm dyad, explains value processes beyond organizational borders and rethinks value capture from a systemic perspective.
Marketing , 2021
The growth of digital platforms generates strong network effects and dynamics of all winners, which disrupts systemic growth and further stimulates competition between them. Despite the positive effects, under certain conditions, these same functions make the currently operating platforms vulnerable to competitive strategic moves through platforms where participants can add value for themselves and at the same time avoid pre-investment in value added generation. In this analysis, we use an interpretive synthesis of different theoretical concepts of platform business to theorize these strategies as a new category and their distinctive features. Overall, the study demonstrates the potential for unconventional and opportunistic strategies to compete on platforms that extend beyond more traditional ones, such as network quality, diversity and size.

The concept of digital platforms has attracted a great deal of attention in the fields of economics and information systems, shaping scholarly discourse for the past few years. However, despite the frequent usage of the term “digital platform” in the literature, its definition covers a wide range of meanings. Scholars often use the term to mean very distinct concepts which creates a sort of semantic confusion within the scientific community. To clarify the different elements and perspectives shaping the definition of a digital platform, a systematic literature review was carried out. A total of 64 definitions from 58 scholarly resources were collected and analyzed through qualitative content analysis. This analytical process aimed to isolate and identify the fundamental elements used in defining digital platforms, along with discerning the multiple perspectives from which this term is approached. Furthermore, this study traces the evolution of the definition of the concept in parallel with the dynamic development of digital platforms in recent years.
