1. LeapFrog’s Supply Chain
The upstream entities of Leapfrog are the custom-designed electronics producer, the Tyvek paper producer in the US, and Capable Toys which all are involved in the production of the Leap Pads. On the other hand, the downstream entities of Leapfrog's supply chain are the retailers such as Target and Toys “R” Us, and the consumers. Leapfrog distributes the final products to the retail outlets, which in turn, makes the product available to consumers. First-tier suppliers would be the custom-designed electronics producer and the Tyvek paper producer in the US, as they deliver raw materials which are developed by Capable Toys into Leap Pads. This makes the company ‘Capable Toys’ a second-tier supplier as the supply the final product to be sold by Leapfrog to other entities.

Agility in the supply chain can be said to be a company’s ability to respond quickly to market demands by changing and adjusting tactics within its operation networks [ CITATION Dav15 \l 1033 ]. There are five (5) dimensions to supply chain agility which include Alertness, accessibility, decisiveness, swiftness, and flexibility[ CITATION Dav15 \l 1033 ]. LeapFrog was accessible to vital information and made prompt decisions. In August 2003, Mr. Kevin Carlson who was a Leapfrog's toy executive got a report of the sales of Little Touch Leap Pads which hit 360 units in the introductory weekend[ CITATION Fow03 \l 1033 ]. The information was shared by the retailers so that the company could use the forecasting systems to approximate the holiday demand which was 700,000 units; more than two times higher from the original producing plan. Leapfrog was able to recalculate and adjust its plans and production levels from the information that came back to it through its supply chain channel. The information gathered from the sale made over the introductory weekend in August and showed the success potential of Leap Pad to be anticipated in the peak months (November and December). The turn-around time of this information was in a couple of days so much that Leapfrog had real-time market data by the Monday following the introductory weekend.
Upon working with Capable Toys within days of developing the forecast, Leapfrog identified problems that need to be addressed in order to meet the target demand.
its customers and in turn, was the foundation that allowed LeapFrog to venture into other products over the years. The downside to this blessing was leapfrog did business at a loss. It took the company a while, but it overcame that challenge and enjoyed success for many years. If it had been August instead of December, LeapFrog would stick to the traditional route of shipping: by sea, as it is the most cost-efficient if the pressure of time is not sensitive.
5. Conclusion
Agility is all about responding to difficult situations in operations and supply chain management. The ability to this is all dependent on what is more important to a firm or business than profit. It is evident that LeapFrog management was more interested in its brand image and the long-term satisfaction of its customers. The real-time response of Leapfrog came with a price and struggle, but the company endured by remaining consistent in its objective and action. Therefore, it is safe to say that Leapfrog and Capable Toys can respond adequately to new market demands.
