Letters of Support from Friends and Family
What are letters of support and why do i need them.
In marriage-based green card cases, USCIS is looking for evidence of a bona fide marriage. A bona fide marriage is another way of saying a real marriage, entered into in good faith. It is important to prove to USCIS that your marriage is genuine since they are on the look out for fraudulent marriages. Essentially, they want to make sure that an applicant married the petitioner for love and not in pursuit of a marriage-based immigration benefit.
One type of evidence that USCIS allows you to include to prove that your marriage is legitimate is by providing them with Letters of Support. Letters of support are statements written by friends and family of the couple that help to demonstrate the validity of the marriage. While letters of support don’t replace more concrete evidence such as joint assets or a shared address, they help build up the credibility of the marriage. For that reason, applicants can include some in the Relationship Evidence section of their application to further strengthen their proof.
Who can write a letter of support?
A letter of support can be written by anyone who has known the couple from before marriage to present time. The writer should be familiar with the couple’s relationship. Examples of people who could write a letter of support include:
- Family members
- Religious leaders
What should be included in letters of support?
The letter is the writer’s opportunity to explain their experiences with the couple. Each letter of support should be unique. However, there are things that each letter should contain, such as::
- Full name and address of the person writing the letter.
- Date that the letter is being written.
- Date and place of birth of the writer.
- How long the writer has known the couple.
- The nature of the relationship between the writer and the couple.
- How often the writer interacts with the couple.
- Descriptions of the interactions or activities between the writer and the couple.
- A written statement that says, “I swear, under penalty of perjury, that the foregoing is true and correct to the best of my knowledge.”
- A copy of the writer’s I.D. on a separate sheet of paper.
- The wet signature of the writer.
How many letters of support should be included?
Though USCIS has not officially stated how many letters of support should be included, our partner attorneys recommend that each case include around 3-5 letters of support. Each letter should be unique in both content and style of writing.
Do the letters need to be notarized?
The letters do not need to be notarized. However, it is helpful to include a statement that swears to the validity of the letter such as, “I swear, under penalty of perjury, that the foregoing is true and correct to the best of my knowledge.”
Does the writer need to be a citizen of the United States?
No, the writer does not have to be a U.S. citizen or even living in the United States.
Does the letter need to be translated into English?
If the letter is in a language other than English, you will need to include a translation of the letter into English along with the original letter. It does not need to be a certified translation, but the translator should include a signed, written personal statement that they are fluent in both languages and that the translation appropriately reflects the document. Here’s an example of what that could look like:
Translation Letter Sample:
I (the translator’s full name), certify that I am fluent in English and have translated (list the specific documents here) from (language) into English as completely and accurately as possible. I’ve attached both the copy of the original document and the translation here.
Sincerely,
Physical Mailing Address

In the U.S. immigration process, the Letter of Support for Immigration Marriage, also referred to as an Affidavit of Support or Marriage Reference Letter, serves to confirm the genuineness of a marriage between a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and a foreign national. This essential document is aimed at ensuring the relationship isn't a mere ruse to gain immigration advantages. Typically authored by a third-party individual, such as a friend, relative, or employer, the letter provides firsthand insights into the couple's relationship. It becomes especially critical during visa applications or status changes for the foreign spouse, especially in scenarios tied to marriage-based green card petitions.

Typically required during visa, residency, or citizenship applications, this letter is particularly vital when the immigrant cannot independently demonstrate their financial stability.
What Is a Letter of Support for Immigration?
An immigration support letter is a well-structured recommendation crafted to advocate for an individual seeking residency in your country. By emphasizing their moral integrity and potential contributions, this letter bolsters their immigration application and aims to persuade the immigration office to grant approval.
Various types of immigration support letters exist, typically distinguished by the author’s relationship to the applicant. Notable examples encompass confirmation of employment letters, penned by the applicant’s employer, and proof of marriage letters, composed by the spouse. Both of these instances serve to underscore the applicant’s stability and commitment, strengthening their case for immigration.
Who Should You Consider for Writing This Letter?
When it comes to choosing someone to write your letter of support for immigration, a good rule of thumb is quality before quantity. You are better off with 3 support letters from credible sources than 30 letters from unconvincing referees.
Firstly, you should only approach someone who is already a citizen of the country to which you are sending your application. You also want a referee who will speak highly of you. Finally, the writer should be someone who knows you personally and can attest to your personality and character.
The following are some good possible options:
- Family members and friends who live in the country
- Prominent community leaders, e.g., the mayor
- Religious leaders such as your Priest or Imam
- The leader of an organization with which you volunteer
- Your employer or supervisor
- Your coworkers
Tip: It is advisable to err on the side of caution when requesting people to write you a letter of support. Only approach people you trust and with whom you are comfortable sharing your plans and immigration status.
Essential Elements
To be effective, a formal support letter should be well-structured and include specific information that highlights the applicant’s positive attributes and contributions to society. The following are essential elements to consider when drafting a letter of support for immigration purposes:
- Establish the writer’s credibility: Begin the letter by introducing yourself, your background, and your relationship to the applicant. Include details such as your occupation, title, and any professional or personal experiences that lend credibility to your support of the applicant.
- Describe the nature of the relationship with the applicant: Clearly explain the personal or professional relationship between you and the applicant. Mention the duration and context of your relationship, which will help establish your familiarity with the applicant’s character and qualifications.
- Highlight the applicant’s positive qualities: Focus on the applicant’s personal attributes, such as their work ethic, honesty, integrity, and other qualities that demonstrate their suitability for immigration benefits. Use specific examples or anecdotes to illustrate these qualities, as this will make the letter more persuasive.
- Emphasize the applicant’s present and future contributions to society: Discuss the applicant’s achievements and contributions in their professional field, community involvement, or volunteer work. Explain how these accomplishments have positively impacted their community and how they will continue to do so in the future. Provide examples of the applicant’s dedication to their work, commitment to helping others, or plans to contribute to their new country.
- Address any potential concerns or challenges: If there are any obstacles or concerns that the immigration judge or officer might have, address them proactively and provide explanations or evidence to mitigate these concerns. This can include the applicant’s efforts to learn the local language, cultural adaptation, or any other steps taken to overcome challenges.
- Offer specific support or assistance: If applicable, mention any assistance you plan to provide the applicant as they adjust to life in the new country. This could include financial support, housing, or mentorship in their professional field.
- Conclude with a strong statement of support: Wrap up the letter with a powerful and heartfelt statement that reinforces your belief in the applicant’s character and potential contributions to their new country. Reiterate your confidence in the applicant and express your hope that the immigration judge or officer will consider the positive qualities and contributions you have outlined in the letter.
- Proofread and edit the letter: Ensure that the letter is free of grammatical errors, typos, and other mistakes that could detract from its impact. Make certain that the letter is well-organized, clear, and concise to make it easy for the immigration judge or officer to understand and consider your points.

Conclude the letter by reaffirming your support for the applicant and asserting that they will be a valuable addition to the country. Offer your contact information and express your willingness to answer any questions or provide further information, if needed.

Introduction.
Writing a support letter for a visa application can be daunting, but it’s a crucial part of the process. These letters serve as proof of your intentions and ties to your home country, helping visa officers understand the purpose and necessity of your visit.
With my extensive experience, I can guide you through this process, ensuring your letter stands out and meets all the necessary criteria.
Step 1: Understand the Purpose
The primary purpose of a support letter is to confirm the applicant’s intention to return to their home country after the visit. It should provide a clear and honest account of the applicant’s ties to their home country and the purpose of their visit.
Trending Now: Find Out Why!
Example: When I wrote a support letter for my friend’s business trip to the US, I focused on his long-term employment with his current employer, his family ties, and his intention to return home after the business meetings.
Step 2: Gather Necessary Information
Before you start writing, gather all the relevant information. This includes:
- Personal details of the applicant (full name, date of birth, passport number)
- Details of the trip (dates, purpose, duration)
- Relationship to the applicant
- Employment details (if applicable)
- Financial information (if required)
Step 3: Structure Your Letter
A well-structured letter makes a significant difference. Here’s a recommended structure:
- Your relationship to the applicant
- Purpose of the letter
- Details of the trip
- Applicant’s ties to the home country
- Financial support (if applicable)
- Summary of key points
- Contact information for further questions
Step 4: Write a Compelling Introduction
Start with a strong introduction that clearly states your relationship with the applicant and the purpose of the letter. Be concise and to the point.
Dear Visa Officer, My name is John Legend, and I am writing this letter in support of my sister, Jane Legends’s visa application for a short-term visit to the United Kingdom. As her elder brother, I have known Jane her entire life, and I can confidently vouch for her intentions and the purpose of her visit.
Step 5: Detail the Trip and Ties to Home Country
In the body of the letter, provide details of the trip and explain the applicant’s ties to their home country. This can include employment, family, property, or any other commitments that ensure their return.
Jane plans to visit the UK from June 1st to June 15th, 2024, to attend a family wedding and visit tourist attractions. She has been employed as a software engineer at XYZ Corporation for the past five years and has always returned home promptly after previous trips. Jane owns a house in her hometown and is the primary caregiver for our elderly parents, further establishing her strong ties to our home country.
Step 6: Offer Financial Support Details (if applicable)
If you are providing financial support for the applicant’s trip, mention this in the letter. Include details about your financial capacity and willingness to support the applicant.
I will be covering all expenses for Jane’s trip, including her flight tickets, accommodation, and daily expenses. Enclosed with this letter are copies of my recent bank statements to substantiate my financial capability.
Step 7: Conclude with a Strong Ending
End the letter by summarizing the key points and providing your contact information for any further questions or clarifications.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that Jane’s visit to the UK is solely for a short-term visit, and she will return home as planned. Should you require any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me at [your contact information]. Sincerely, John Doe

Letter of support for visa.
Undoubtedly, one of the most important components of any effective visa application is the letter of support . As a frequent traveler myself, I recommend preparing ahead of time, reaching out to possible sponsors (people who will support your stay) and completing paperwork, such as visa applications, ahead of time.
If you are planning to host a family member or friend from another country, or if you are a traveler looking to spend a prolonged period of time (often greater than 90 days) in a foreign country, a letter of support will explain the the situation and will describe how the stay will be funded.
The letter of the support should explain the relationship of the visitor and the sponsor, along with explaining the reason for the visit and detailed information on where the visitor will live, work (if applicable) and how they will survive financially.
For example, if you live in France and are wanting to sponsor your cousin from from Turkey who intends to study in your hometown of Paris for a semester, your letter will explain why your cousin is visiting and how you support your cousin during her visit. If your cousin will also receive support from the local school or college she is studying with, an additional letter of support from the school or college will also help secure the visa. While visa applications look different, across different countries, there are five practical tips you should consider when writing a letter of support for a traveler’s visa application. Explaining the situation and length of stay , describing how the traveler will fund their visit, including information on their accommodations and including evidence along with the letter of support will help ensure your visa is approved.
Describing, in enough detail to paint a picture, the situation of the traveler is extremely important. Outside of travel for strictly “tourism”, most countries do not want visitors in their country for prolonged periods of time without a purpose. In the letter of support, explain why the visitor is coming to your home country , what they will be doing while they are there and how long they intend to stay. In the example above, you may state, “I am writing to confirm that (insert name of visitor as it is on their passport), my cousin from Turkey, will arrive in July of 2015 and will study at the Paris Make-Up Academy from August of 2015 until January of 2015″.
Throughout her stay, she will stay with me in my home and I will provide room and board.” One of the chief reasons visa applications are rejected is because the host country is unable to verify how the visitor will fund their trip and where they will live. In the letter of support, if you plan to provide room and board, as in the example above, you must ensure this information is clearly explained on the letter.
Furthermore, if the traveler has emergency and travel funds in an account they can access and document, it is important to list this in the letter as well. For example, if your cousin receives 800 lira a month from rental property in Turkey and plans to access this to fund their stay, this information is extremely helpful to the host country. In my instance, I was able to stay in Germany for nearly a year because of a letter of support from my sister and because I able to document I was working part-time for a local military base.
Finally, for everything you mention in your letter of support, you MUST attach documentation . As the host country sponsor, providing a copy of your lease to show you have a permanent residence to host the traveler is extremely helpful.
On behalf of the traveler, ensure they know to attach copies of travel documentation, countries like to know when the traveler is planning to leave and how they will exit the country. If the traveler has documentation on why they are staying (school, work, etc.), ask them to attach any documentation they have to the letter. Finally, question the traveler about their financial situation and ask them to provide documentation for any source of funds you include in your letter.
Based off my experience, and my conversations with travelers worldwide, preparing ahead of time, reaching out to a sponsor and including an effective letter of support with documentation will help ensure you are able to enter, and remain for an extended period of time, the country of your choice!
