• Laptop or desktop?   Whichever you choose depends on your personal preference and work style, though laptops tend to offer more flexibility. 
• Note:   Chromebooks (Chrome OS) and iPads (iOS) do not meet the minimum requirements for coursework at SNHU. These offer limited functionality and do not work with some course technologies. Earn a career-focused writing certificate before graduating

In addition to a focus on your creative interests, part of our 48-credit online MFA curriculum requires you to choose from 2 certificate offerings. These certificates are included as part of your MFA program and are thoughtfully designed to round out your education and better prepare you for a multitude of writing-related careers.

The Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching of Writing could be the right fit for you if you're interested in teaching in an online classroom setting — a great supplement to a writing career. You'll learn approaches to editing and coaching, as well as how to establish a virtual instructor presence and cultivate methods for supporting and engaging students within online writing communities.

Alternatively, you might be more drawn to the Graduate Certificate in Professional Writing , which highlights the technical and business opportunities available to writers. Students will develop a range of skills, such as copywriting, social media, marketing principles and content generation, learning many of the freelancing skills integral to today’s project-driven economy.

Graduate with a completed and revised novel

Every graduate of Southern New Hampshire University's online MFA program will leave the program with a 50,000-word manuscript for a novel in one of the four genres the program covers – contemporary, young adult, romance or speculative genre.

If you'd rather combine elements of the four offered genres, you can do that, too. For example, you might write a YA speculative fiction novel. Throughout your tenure in the program, you can choose to work on a singular idea that you will develop during the three thesis courses, or begin a new project for your thesis.

Additional requirements for the online MFA include a creative writing sample (8-12 pages) and a personal statement. Writing samples will be evaluated on narrative technique and structure, character and setting, and the command and execution of language. The personal statement asks you to explain how someone else’s story – such as a novel, movie, or a personal account – has impacted their life and influenced their drive to become a writer.

Practically speaking, a Master of Fine Arts differs from a Master of Arts in a few fundamental ways:

Yes. The MFA is considered a terminal degree, which is similar to professional degrees granted in other fields, such as the PhD or the EdD, according to guidelines established by the College Art Association of America. 3 For that reason, most universities view it as a qualification to teach creative writing at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

In fact, the curriculum for the online MFA degree at Southern New Hampshire University may set you up for success in this area. Students in the program are required to choose one of two embedded certificate offerings – one of them being a Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching of Writing.

I have completed 4 online classes for an MFA in Creative Writing. The professors have been accommodating, informative, and encouraging. The material that I am learning does prepare me for a future in writing, as I have been published as a result of the work in one class. I am very pleased with the school and the teachers. Don’t let the negative reviews push you away from this school. It is a wonderful school, even for an online school.

The online MFA program is new and quite good. The professors are dedicated and provide a strong foundation in theory and craft. There is a wide diversity of students (of all genres), but you get out of it what you put into it. The program's strong points outweigh the weak points, in my opinion. Since getting a real teaching job is nearly impossible unless you go to the elite programs, this program is well-suited to those who want to improve their writing, simple as that, and have a day job that they ... It's expensive, and there is almost no funding, so this program is not for those who have the time, talent, and financial resources to dedicate a few years of their life, 24 hours a day, to becoming a writer. I wish I could do that, but responsibilities weigh me down. And if you're like me and live thousands of miles from any graduate program in English, it's perfect. When finished, I'll have an unknown MFA, but it has been my dream to have one. And it will definitely have been a well-earned one.

There is also a lot of focus on publishing and the business side of being an author. If you enjoy writing and are willing to make time to do the work, I think you will enjoy this program. Lastly, the technical quality of the courses, video discussions, research library, and student access to grades, and transcripts is excellent. The registration, scheduling, and financial services are on auto pilot and everything is processed for you. Amazing! Nothing like the the other colleges and universities I have attended. I really like this college. I had a rough start due to issues in my personal life. After starting my first class, I got very sick and had to withdraw. Then i decided to change my mind about my major. Many universities would make you apply all over again for a new graduate program, you usually can't just change majors like you can with undergrad. I was delighted that they let me simply change into the new program! Unfortunately a string of unfortunate events occurred in my life which really screwed ... Read More me up. Due to a death in the family causing me to have to move suddenly to watch the now empty house, then move again when estate was settled, I was emotionally fried and let my course go. Not only that but due to the short school terms at SNHU, I hadn't realized that the new term had started and I wasn't doing any work for it! Due to this string of circumstances, I had to file appeals to reinstate my funding. But, they worked with me and my advisor was GREAT through all of it. Now that the dust has settled, I'm back enrolled again and about to finally complete my first class. The professor is great, knows the topic well, nice, communicative. The class format is easy to navigate and submit work. I think the program that I'm in is absolutely great. And there are so many good programs at SNHU that I had a hard time choosing, and and have looked at many on their website that I would whole hearted recommend to others. I've called their one stop help line a few times and the wait is never too long, they usually can help with whatever you need, or will refer you to who can. I've used their online chat to ask questions and to chat with a librarian. That plus the personally assigned advisor make navigating this school very easy! I actually did start a masters at another college, University at Buffalo in the NY state system. Even though that was in person, I felt totally alone there, like nobody had my back. There wasn't anyone guide you in the program. Your advisor did that in addition to teaching a full schedule and advising many other students. I felt lost and confused there. I'm much more comfortable and confident at SNHU. And after all my unfortunate false starts, I feel this will be smooth sailing finally :-)
