On behalf of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), our editorial team, and publishing partners at John Wiley and Sons, I'm pleased to welcome you to the inaugural issue of Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis (RPTH). As outlined by ISTH leaders in this issue and as an example of ISTH's innovative approaches to enhancing science dissemination, RPTH will fill a publishing niche by providing an open‐access online‐only venue to make research findings in our field accessible to the widest possible audience. Thanks to the enthusiastic response of the thrombosis and haemostasis research community in submitting manuscripts, while still being rigorous with peer review, we accepted more articles for the first issue than we could fit in this commemorative print edition. Therefore, the editors selected a few of the best articles for publication online only as part of this issue. I'm pleased to share 18 manuscripts in this hybrid issue, including 2 review articles, 10 original reports, 3 brief reports, 2 case reports and 1 forum. I invite you to read and share these outstanding articles both in print and online.
RPTH is a living journal providing easy accessibility and a forum for discussion of science for researchers, clinicians, patients, and advocates. The journal is found on its website, on Twitter, and on other platforms such as the ISTH YouTube channel. How many times have you been frustrated by barriers in reading science articles that you discover on your mobile device or computer? RPTH solves this problem by joining a growing wave of journals using new methods to disseminate science via open‐access platforms that are freely available to all. This mode of dissemination allows investigators to share their science with a large audience quickly. For example, simultaneously with the online publication of articles, readers can see featured articles on their Twitter feed by following @RPTHJournal or #RPTH, click on the article link, and read the article easily on their mobile device. Readers can then comment on the work, pose provocative questions to others, and enter into discussions of that work. As of this writing in June 2017, our first published articles have already generated much lively discussion.
For those unfamiliar with social media platforms, we are providing helpful materials to get you started on the journal's website http://rpth.isth.org . Of course, traditional means of reading articles on the website can also be used. Owing to the open‐access model, articles can be read, downloaded as PDFs to your computer or other device, and freely shared.
RPTH offers many advantages to authors as outlined in my recent editorial in the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis . 1 While we undertake rigorous peer review, the publication process will be faster than traditional paper journals, allowing rapid advancement of knowledge, with the open access design and social media allowing a platform that allows immediate feedback and networking.
I hope that readers of all backgrounds will find helpful information in RPTH. As the inaugural editor‐in‐chief, I will do my best to bring you the highest quality science our field is producing, while providing this in a manner that is understandable to all, and easy to access and share. I am very appreciative to the ISTH for its confidence in me and my team as we bring this journal to you. I welcome readers to provide feedback and suggestions on Twitter or via email. I also encourage the science community to submit their best work to RPTH.
