BIGS-DR students
More than 400 doctoral students from 100 countries have participated in the BIGS-DR program at ZEF so far. Each annual 'batch' comprises around 20-30 students who come from different disciplinary backgrounds.
Our students complete their doctoral studies in about 3-4 years and receive their doctoral degree from one of the faculties of the University of Bonn.
Study Program
BIGS-DR offers its students a tailor-made, interdisciplinary study program including courses, supervision and field research. ZEF's interdisciplinary and international setting offers many opportunities for broadening knowledge, strengthening skills and extending own networks.
Beyond, ZEF and the University of Bonn offer a wide portfolio of additional trainings to improve professional skills.
Why apply for a doctorate at ZEF?
BIGS-DR students participate in a tailor-made (inter)disciplinary course program .
BIGS-DR provides intensive supervision and tutorship within its structured doctoral program. In regular meetings, students are supported and guided by a team of experts consisting of their supervisors and senior researchers at ZEF.
BIGS-DR students are junior researchers and therewith part of an international and interdisciplinary academic community of junior and senior researchers, professors, and alumni.
ZEF collaborates with numerous institutions and projects worldwide , offering opportunities for joint lectures and research cooperation.
BIGS-DR students improve their professional skills and career prospects by attending workshops on academic writing, intercultural training, and research ethics.
Thanks to the structured program, it takes BIGS-DR students 3-4 years on average to conduct research , analyze their data, publish academic papers, present results at international conferences , complete their dissertations and obtain their doctoral degrees.
Upon successfully defending their dissertation, students are awarded a doctoral degree from one of the Faculties at University of Bonn (mostly Agriculture, Natural sciences, or Arts).
BIGS-DR courses count for European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System ( ECTS ). The course program at BIGS-DR amounts to 30 ECTS credits.

Program structure and curriculum
All PhD tracks offered in the PhD Program share the same structure and general curriculum. The program’s curriculum is divided into a qualification and a dissertation phase:
Qualification Phase
During the qualification phase (about three semesters), students acquire methodological and research-oriented training in mandatory course work in economic theory, applied economics, business studies, econometrics, and economic policy. Students define their research area and find supervisory support from two supervisors. They write research proposals that are discussed with faculty members individually and in seminars in order to provide early feedback on the scientific potential of research ideas. This is a central part of the PhD Program, in which the students have full flexibility in the choice of their research topics and of the supervisors. During this phase, students are funded through stipends that allow for this flexibility. In total, students have to complete a minimum of 90 ECTS credits in order to finish the qualification phase of the program.
Dissertation Phase
During the subsequent dissertation phase (about three years), students write a doctoral thesis while having the opportunity to apply their knowledge in the professional research environment that is provided at the Berlin universities and research institutes participating in the Berlin School of Economics. In this phase, students are typically employed at their supervisor’s chair or in research groups at research institutes.
The PhD will be awarded by one of the institutions in the Berlin School of Economics with the right to award doctoral degrees. In most cases, the PhD is awarded by the institution the student’s first supervisor is affiliated with.

PhD in Economics - with a full-time scholarship at DIW Graduate Center
Phd programs, 28 november 2024, 01 october 2025, 30 september 2030, 15 january 2025, laura starck.
The DIW Graduate Center (GC) at the German Institute for Economic Research welcomes applications from highly qualified post-graduate students from around the world to enroll in its structured doctoral program in Economics.
Institution The German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) is one of the leading economic research institutes in Germany. We are an independent, non-profit institute involved in economic research, service and policy advice. In addition to co-operating closely with universities in Berlin and Brandenburg, we are also active in international academic networks.
Position Doctoral Student in Economics
The goal of the DIW Graduate Center is to provide outstanding doctoral students with a research environment and a training structure that will develop their talents in exemplary manner. It provides them to a deep understanding of economic and social processes while offering them the opportunity to apply their knowledge within the professional research environment of one of the leading economic think tanks in Germany.
The Graduate Center offers a 5-year program of in-depth training in Economics leading to a PhD from one of Berlin’s universities. The student will go through a high-level coursework curriculum and receive on-the-job training in DIW Berlin’s research departments. Student’s research should focus on theoretical and/or applied topics within Economics and related social sciences. Both the education and the research at the GC have a strong empirical component. Doctoral training also encourages funded internships at prestigious institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and ministries, as well as research stays at renowned universities around the world.
After successfully completing the program students will have submitted a number of papers to refereed scientific journals. They will receive a certificate confirming participation along with a doctoral degree.
The DIW Graduate Center offers five years of funding with a standard stipend of 1,450 euros per month in the first year and a work contract in subsequent years. After completing the first year, doctoral students are assigned to the research departments of the institute. Research positions are offered depending on the volume of research projects under work.
Requirements Applicants must hold a master’s degree or diploma in Economics in order to apply for the economic training program. An application during the course of studies is possible, provided that the degree is successfully completed before the program starts. Degrees from other related fields (such as civil engineering, statistics or quantitative social sciences) may also fulfill requirements for the program if the applicant has a sufficient background in Economics.
Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency unless they hold a degree from a university in an English-speaking country or can document at least one year of studies at an English-speaking university. Sufficient evidence for a good command of English is a high score on TOEFL or IELTS tests. Knowledge of German is not a necessary requirement for a successful application, but students are encouraged to learn and improve their skills.
Deadline of Application: January 15, 2025 . Application procedure and further information: https://www.diw.de/en/diw_01.c.799242.en/application.html
